One of our long-standing members, Richard Harris, recently lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.
Originally a member of the tennis section Richard, as well as being a keen if somewhat ‘frustrated’ player, supported the club by organising and refereeing junior tournaments. He was a representative for the Isle of Wight on the Hampshire and IoW branch of the LTA.
However frustration took a back seat when he turned his attention to croquet. Richard was fond of both variations of the game: association and golf. He represented the club on many occasions achieving, when he was an up-and-coming player, the success of winning the All England Handicap Golf Croquet tournament. This success continued right through to last year when he with his partner Jim O’Keeffe won the Southern Federation Solstice Cup.
Additionally Richard was Club Secretary for many years and latterly has been serving on the Management Committee in the role of Development Chairman.
Richard’s wife Diana is also a stalwart of our club usually to be seen either behind the bar or organising the juniors on a Saturday morning. We send our heartfelt condolences to Diana and their children, John and Rachel, at this sad time.
Richard’s funeral is planned for 3pm on Thursday June 23rd at the crematorium. Croquet players are invited to wear “whites” if they wish. Diana and her family thought this would be appropriate in view of Richard’s love of croquet. The wake will be at the Clubhouse after the service.
