Westridge Tournament 2016
Brilliant sunshine greeted the 97 entries who competed in the first weekend’s events of the IW tennis championships at Ryde Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
While Andy Murray was battling to gold in the heat of Rio, the four seeded players in the mens singles, the championships blue riband event, progressed to Sunday mornings semi-finals. The first completed match saw former champion and second seed Pete Reynolds (Ryde Lawn) defeat fourth seed Adam Gibson (Ryde Mead) 6-3, 6-1. In the other half of the draw third seed and veteran of the draw, Nick Searles (Ryde Lawn and Mead) pushed top seed James Scully-Syer (Ryde Lawn) in two very tight sets with the former losing 6-3, 6-4. In the final Scully-Syer made fewer errors than the free hitting Reynolds to take the title for the first time in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
The final of the mixed doubles event produced the tidiest performance of the weekend. Having beaten Sally Hardman and Matt Olive (Ryde Lawn) in a tight semi-final 6-4, 6-3, top seeds Jitka Davey and Adam Gibson (Ryde Mead) comfortably overcame second seeds Melissa O’Riain and James Scully-Syer (Ryde Lawn) 6-1, 6-1 in the final. In the final of the mixed consolation event J-Lo Moore and David Johnson (Ryde Lawn) were defeated by Lynn Sandy and James Smith (Ryde Lawn) 6-1, 6-3.
Meanwhile on the grass courts seven pairs played over the week-end in a round robin 60+ mixed doubles event. Having won their respective group matches undefeated Christine Harrison and Richard Hutchins overcame Heather Mill and Bob Greenham (all Ryde Lawn) 6-2, 6-0.
After superb weather on the first weekend gusty wind conditions were faced by the competitors on the second weekend of the tournament.
In the most hotly contested event of the weekend father and son pairing of Lee and Regan Matthews (Ryde Mead) took the mens doubles title for the third year. In their semi-final they were pushed to a third set tie break following a determined comeback by Gary Mead and Jeremy Tung (Ryde Lawn). Justin Biggs and Nick Searles were defeated in the final 6-1, 7-5.
The consolation doubles saw Jon Brown and Harry Steed ease out the scratch pairing of Richard Hutchins and James Smith 7-6, 6-2.
In the consolation mens singles Matt Olive (Ryde Lawn) held off a spirited performance by teenager Finn Tellwright. Olive winning 6-0, 7-5.
The final of the over 60’s was a close run all Ryde Lawn affair for Hampshire County veteran Richard Hutchins and David McMullan. They squeezed out former champions Bob Greenham and Richard Ramsden 7-6, 2-6, 11-9.
Carrie Bateman and Sarah Chatterley overcame Lynn Sandy and Kahren Barter (all Ryde Lawn) 6-3, 7-5 in the ladies doubles.
The deciding third set in the ladies over 60’s doubles was a thrilling affair. J-Lo Moore and Gill Lloyd overcoming Thelma Howland and Heather Mill (all Ryde Lawn) 5-7,6-3,10-6.
The presentations were made by sponsor David Winkles of Westridge Garage which was followed by a BBQ and music performed by The Grimshaw Family.
