All-England Handicap GC Final 2016
This event’s inaugural visit to Ryde on 17-18th September was dedicated in memory of Richard Harris, a twice past winner from Ryde Lawn who sadly passed away earlier in the year. The winner’s trophy was presented by Richard’s widow Diana to John Noble from Letchworth. Playing off scratch and conceding 55 extra turns across the block John took the place of a late withdrawal and won 11 of his 13 all-play-all games, two wins ahead of Ryde’s Pam Sim in second place.
Many of the players were shocked to discover on day one that fleeces and gloves were preferred wear as a cold northerly wind and overcast skies replaced the balmy September heatwave. The addition of hot soup to the lunch menu was welcomed by all and the added incentive ‘to play with reasonable dispatch’ was a manager’s dream, with the result that all seven rounds were completed by 6.15pm.
John took an overnight lead of 6 wins with Geoff Johnson (Watford) on 5 and a chasing pack of seven players on 4 including John Sim also from Ryde. There was much to play for as summer returned on day two and the gloves were off. Despite a second defeat (to Pam) John edged further ahead whilst Geoff and John Sim slipped back allowing a strong finish from Pam to lift her into the runner-up spot.
Several players with limited tournament experience were attracted to this competition and we hope they will feel encouraged to take on similar challenges in the near future as a result.[slideshow_deploy id=’4019′]
